Dragan Sremec is a graduate of the Zagreb Academy of Music, where he was taught by Josip Nochta. He also graduated in Ensemble Conducting (taught by Igor Gjadrov). He then received a scholarship from the French government to study with Daniel Deffayet and a Fulbright scholarship to study with Eugene Rousseau at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

As a soloist he won the Darko Lukić Prize and a number of other important competitions in the former Yugoslavia and he also won a number of awards with the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet.

He has performed as a soloist all over the world, including in Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Russia, the USA, and Italy. He has also appeared with many renowned orchestras, groups, ensembles, and soloists.

Dragan Sremec is the founder of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet. For some years now he has also been principal saxophonist of both the Zagreb Philharmonic and the Croatian Radio Television Symphony Orchestra.

Dragan Sremec has recorded many CDs, as a soloist, with the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, and with the pianist Djordje Stanetti, especially for Croatian Radiotelevision. As a soloist and as a chamber musician he has also premiered some fifty works written by Croat and Slovene composers, most of which were dedicated to him or to the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet.

He has served on the jury of numerous international competitions and has given master classes and seminars in Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, and the United States.

He has also conducted a number of Croatian orchestras: the Zagreb Philharmonic, the Croatian Radio Television Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, and the Croatian Army Symphony Wind Orchestra.

Dragan Sremec is currently Professor of Saxophone and Vice-Dean of the Zagreb University Music Academy.

Julia Nolan studied the saxophone with Eugene Rousseau at Indiana University and went on to further studies at special classes with Claude Delangle (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse, Paris) and Frederick Hemke (Northwestern University, Chicago).

Always keen to promote and commission new works for the saxophone, Julia Nolan has collaborated with many Canadian composers (including Stephen Chatman, Keith Hamel, Robert Pritchard, Nicolas Scherzinger, Jacquie Leggatt, Hope Lee, Fred Stride, Neal Currie, Alain Mayrand, and Alan Matheson).

At the World Saxophone Congresses in Ljubljana and Minneapolis she premiered works by Fred Stride and Ian McDougall with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, as well as works composed by Stephen Chatman and Robert Pritchard. She has also premiered works by Charles Stolte and Jan Freidlin.

As a soloist, Julia Nolan has recorded Paule Maurice's Tableaux de Provence with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, conducted by Mario Bernardi.

She also takes an interest in other genres and is a member of one of Alan Matheson's jazz groups and was a guest artist on his latest CD. She has also appeared with him at the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra Festival.

She is currently focusing mainly on interdisciplinary works. She has, for example, played a work for saxophone and interactive computer (WindoW by Keith Hamel), another that combines saxophone and video (Strength by Robert Pritchard), and a work for saxophone and dancer, written specially for her and Kathryn Ricketts.

Julia Nolan is working on a doctorate in philosophy. Her research on the subject of music teaching has opened up new perspectives. Her work on her thesis, Artistry through Pedagogy, is backed by the Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Jean-Denis Michat is a versatilemusician who trained at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris from 1990 to 1999 (under Claude Delangle).

He has performed as a guest soloist in Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Canada, and Spain. He has appeared with a variety of line-ups, including symphony orchestras, string ensembles, and wind ensembles. Regarded as one of the outstanding representatives of the «French style», he has spent considerable time on making transcriptions in order to promote the saxophone as a new «classical» instrument; he is also increasingly invited to perform his own works. His music has been played by a great many ensembles, both professional and amateur.

His apprenticeship years were lit up by his encounter with Karlheinz Stockhausen and his work. Following the advice and the moderating influence of other teachers, he went on to develop a deeper understanding of composition that made possible an individual approach to musical time linked to the theatrical, dramatic organisation of musical discourse. Having taken part as a saxophonist in numerous premieres, he has built up considerable, valuable expertise in the development of new work, as seen «from the inside».

As a teacher, he holds the Certificat d’Aptitude and the Diplôme d’Etat de Saxophone. At the age of 24 he was appointed Professeur at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional in Lyons. One year later he took up the position of Professeur- Assistant at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris. His postgraduate class at the CRR in Lyons attracts many students from Europe, Asia, and America. For more than ten years now, Jean-Denis Michat has been teaching at the highest level in a variety of contexts (European University of Saxophone in Gap, master classes in France and elsewhere, educational publications, etc.)

Jean-Denis Michat est un musicien complet, il s’est formé au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris de 1990 à 1999 (classe de Claude Delangle).

Il a été invité comme soliste au Japon, en Russie, aux Pays-Bas, à Taïwan, au Canada ou en Espagne. Il a joué avec différents types de formations musicales (orchestres philharmoniques, à cordes ou d’harmonie). Considéré comme l’un des plus fins représentants du jeu «à la française», il développe un travail pointu de
transcriptions afin d’imposer le saxophone comme nouvel instrument de culture «classique» et est invité, de plus en plus régulièrement, à interpréter ses propres oeuvres.

Sa musique est jouée par de nombreux ensembles tant professionnels qu’amateurs. Sa rencontre avec Karlheinz Stockhausen et son oeuvre a littéralement illuminé les années d’apprentissage de Jean-Denis Michat. Suite aux conseils et tempérances d’autres pédagogues, il a approfondi son point de vue sur la composition, ce qui lui a permis une appropriation personnelle d’un temps musical dilaté et d’une certaine théâtralité dans la gestion du discours. Sa participation en tant que saxophoniste à de nombreuses premières lui confère à cet égard une précieuse et solide expertise de la création vécue «de l’intérieur».

D’un point de vue pédagogique, il est titulaire d’un Certificat d’Aptitude et d’un Diplôme d’Etat de Saxophone. A l’âge de 24 ans, il est nommé Professeur au Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Lyon. Un an plus tard, il accède à la fonction de Professeur- Assistant au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Sa classe de 3e cycle du CRR de Lyon attire bon nombre d’étudiants européens, asiatiques ou américains. Cela fait maintenant plus de dix ans que Jean-Denis Michat multiplie les expériences pédagogiques du plus haut niveau (Université Européenne d’Eté de Gap, master classes en France et à l’étranger, publications d’ouvrages
pédagogiques,…).

When being interviewed by the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester in 1982, McChrystal chose the saxophone for his second course.

He became the first student to receive the RNCM’s Professional Performance Diploma with three prizes, before going on to further studies with John Harle and Frederick Hemke at the Guildhall School in London and Northwestern University in Chicago.

He has won numerous competitions, including the Intercollegiate Ivan Sutton Recording Award, which brought an engagement at Wigmore Hall. Gerard McChrystal has played in more than 30 countries all over the world.

He has recorded albums with, among others, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Ulster Orchestra, the London Musici, the guitarist Craig Ogden, the Smith Quartet, and Yan Pascal Tortelier. With Tortelier as conductor, he has recorded Debussy’s Rapsodie.

He has also played on Billy Cowie’s Romances and Toccatas album and on Another Ireland with Sinead O’Connor, Brian Kennedy, and Anuna.

Gerard Mc Chrystal has premiered works by Sir Harrison Birtwhistle, Sir Malcolm Arnold, John Tavener, John Metcalf, Gary Carpenter, Michael McGlynn, Tommy Smith, and others. In 1999 he gave the premiere of Who’s Afraid of Red by the Belfast-born composer Ian Wilson.

He has developed a new, accessible repertoire, influenced by Celtic music.

He has collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Philharmonia, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Stuttgart Staatsorchester, the Orchestra of San Francisco Ballet, and orchestras in Cardiff, Dublin and Borneo.

He has appeared with celebrated musicians such as Philip Glass, the Smith Quartet, the guitarist Craig Ogden, the percussionists of the Ensemble Bash, the Soweto String Quartet, the tenor Tommy Smith, and the Irish choirs Anuna and Codetta.

His new programme, Stand Up, has been given two awards by the Arts Council.
